Carbonite vs. Mozy: Which is Better?
By RankReviews
Retrieving lost data on your computer is a laborious task as it calls for effort by a data recovery specialist. If you are working on an important project, the safety of your data has to be ensured. In order for a smooth running of your system, whatever it is that you are doing, installing a sound backup system on your computer takes care of all your backup needs and lets you work in peace.
Online backup is the wisest and the best method employed to store your important data that can be restored in a millisecond when required. While choosing an online backup provider, you should consider your specific backup needs like the frequency of backup, number of computers required to be backed up and your budget. The provider should be able to guarantee security of data, stability and excellent quality.
In this article I am going to discuss the advantages that Carbonite online backup software has over Mozy online backup software.
After reading a lot about Carbonite, I decided to give this numero uno online backup solution software a try. Named after a fictional compound from Star Wars, this easy-to-use online backup software ensures complete security of your data by encrypting it twice and then storing it on its secure data server.
Let us have a look at pros and cons of this based on my experience.
Pros:
Some of the things I really liked about working with Carbonite are that it –
- Is offered at an amazingly affordable price.
- Has a very simple online backup process that requires only an installation of the software on your computer.
- Offers unlimited backup storage capacity.
- Has a Modest backup process.
- Is free from maintenance.
- Acts as insurance for your most private data.
- Offers off-site encryption of data that cannot be accessed by anyone other than you.
- Boasts of an excellent file marking system that makes checking file-status simpler.
- Works on Windows Vista and XP, and Mac.
- Enables backup of new and changed files all the time, even when you are not working.
- Offers remote access to backup files from wherever you are.

- Is ideal for those who have a great deal of data to be stored.
- Is integrated into the system, so does not require any special training.
- Enables retrieval of lost data to a new computer in the event of a mishap.
Cons:
- I found the initial backup to be quite slow.
- It does not offer free version for limited backup, which is quite a letdown.
- Fewer customizable options, which can be botheration for some.
- Does not guarantee external drive backup.
Mozy
Mozy, owned by EMC Corporation, which is a Fortune 500 Company, is another reputed online backup provider. It ensures that your digital life goes on uninterrupted. You have two different versions, MozyHome for non-commercial use and MozyPro for business use, both being excellent tools for backing up your data.
Based on my experience, here are the Pros and Cons of the Mozy online backup software.
Pros:
- Is Easy set up.
- Performs automatic backup even when you are not working.
- Affordable pricing.
- Unlimited backup plans.
- Maintenance-free system.
- Encryption of data that ensures their safety.
- Dependable backup facility.
- Remote access to backup files.
- Works very fast, detecting the new and changed files automatically.
- Data retrieval with multiple restore options.
- Works on Windows XP, 2000 and Vista, and on Mac 10.4 and above.
- Offers free use of storage upto 2 GB.
Cons:
- Lacks efficient customer support.
- Does not support backup of external drives.
- To be a difficult to use when I tried to restore backed up files.
- Slows down the computer when running in the background.
Based on my experience in working with both the backup tools, I found Carbonite to be a better option of the two because of its reliability and ease of use. The lack of customer support for Mozy was a big disappointment. Most of the features exhibited by Carbonite and Mozy are similar, but I found Carbonite much better in terms of retrieval of data, pricing and client support.
While Carbonate offers support via email, live chat, telephone and a special telephone support for a small annual fee, Mozy gives only email and live chat support. Overall, I found Carbonite to work ‘as advertised’ and when compared with Mozy, I will choose Carbonite as the winner.
